Transistors

What are transistors?

A transistor is essentially a miniature semiconductor that can amplify or switch electronic signals and electrical power, acting as the gatekeeper in an electronic circuit. Typically, transistors consist of three layers of a semiconductor material.

Express Electronics have 10,000 products in stock and access to hundreds of thousands more, so we can find the transistor you need no matter how specialised the purpose.

Types of transistors

Transistors typically fall into two main families: Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) and Field-Effect Transistors (FETs). Both BJTs and FETs rely on specific semiconductor materials like silicon, geranium and gallium arsenide, each offering distinct applications.

Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs)

  • Structure: BJTs are made up of three layers of semiconductor material called the emitter, base, and collector. There are two types of BJTS- NPN (standing for negative-positive-negative) and PNP (standing for positive-negative-positive).
  • How they work: BJTs control the flow of current using two types of charges, electrons and holes. In an NPN transistor, electrons flow from the emitter to the collector, controlled by the base. In a PNP transistor, this process is reversed, with holes (the absence of electrons) flowing from the emitter to the collector.
  • Applications: BJTs are commonly used to amplify electrical signals or switch currents on and off.

Field-Effect Transistors (FETs):

  • Structure: FETs also have three terminals: the gate, drain and source.
  • Types: There are two primary types of FETs: Junction FETs (JFETs) and Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor FETs (MOSFET).
  • How they work: FETs control the flow of current by applying voltage to the gate, which changes the conductivity of a channel between the drain and source.
  • Applications: FETs are used in low-noise amplifiers, analog switches, and high-frequency circuits like those in microwave technology.
