Types of Sensors

- Proximity Sensor: A type of non-contact sensor used for object detection. It uses IR light or electromagnetic radiation to measure the distance to a target.
- IR Sensor (Infrared Sensor): IR sensors emit and detect IR radiation and can be used as obstacle detectors.
There are two types:
– Passive IR Sensors: Detect emitted energy from obstacles without an IR source (e.g., thermocouples, pyroelectric detectors, bolometers).
– Active IR Sensors: Use an IR source (LED or laser diode) and an IR detector (photodiode or phototransistor). - Thermocouple Sensors: Temperature sensor consisting of two dissimilar metal wires joined at one end, connected to a thermocouple-capable device at the other end.
- Ultrasonic Sensor: Used to measure distance or travel time using ultrasonic waves. They emit a wave, detect the reflection from the target, and measure the travel time between emission and reception. Unlike optical sensors, which use separate transmitter and receiver elements, ultrasonic sensors use a single element for both.
- Pressure Sensor: A pressure sensor functions by applying an input voltage and detecting the pressure. It then generates an analog output voltage proportional to the measured pressure.
